design your wardrobe week 2 and my shameful winter fashion faux pas

Have you been following along with my journey to design my Fall wardrobe? Seamwork’s Design Your Wardrobe course guides you through the entire process, helping you create a well thought-out and curated wardrobe plan. Week one was all about inspiration (finding your true aesthetic and creating a mood board.)  Week two helped me take a closer look at my media – fabrics and colors.

A beautiful fashion collection consists of three color groups: neutrals, basics, and statement colors. I already knew my neutral colors, as I am building my collection around my casual go-to pieces (jeans, leggings and tees.) Earth shattering, right? Blacks, grays & whites.

The next step was shopping my stash and selecting fabrics that will work with my plan. Here is where I ran off the road completely and crashed into a deep fashion faux pas ditch. My entire hoard of fabrics are all summery cottons. Nothing that would even keep your hamster warm on a breezy day. And then it dawned on me. I’M ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE who dash to the grocery store during a snowstorm, wearing a pair of socks with sandals. I love summer fashions so much, that I’m at a total loss when it comes to tweeds, wools, and the art of layering. I found only one fabric I could use in my Fall collection – a light blue chambray for a loose-fitting tunic, which can be layered under jackets or chunky sweaters.

After shopping some of my favorite online stores for modern fabrics, I added two adorable Amy Butler cordury prints, and a black & white graphic flannel.  Hence, my basic colors are blue and black, and my statement color is a playful citron yellow.

  1. I love the little jacket with the “ruffled” sleeves that are in the picture over the jeans. Do you have a pattern for that?
