fail-proof tip for staying on track with your new year goals

monthly goals

Being born a list-maker is both a blessing and a curse. If you’re in this club along with me, then you know exactly what I mean by that. We are the ones who gravitate to the school supplies aisles of stores. We can never own enough cute notebooks or journals. We have very specific preferences in pens and pencils. And we make lists. ALL. THE. TIME.

We are also the ones who look forward to New Year’s Eve – not for the midnight toasts or flying confetti – but for the chance to ponder the past year, re-evaluate our goals, and set new resolutions. Our constant quest for self-improvement is admirable, folks. But let’s be real, how many of those goals do we actually mark off those carefully curated lists? Do we sometimes lose interest along the way? Become tempted with a new endeavor?

This year, chicks, we’re going to achieve those goals. ALL OF THEM. And I know just the method to accomplish this.

Before I say anything else, take 3 minutes out of your day and watch this short video.  It is the most inspiring, life-changing TED Talk I have ever heard.

I’ve always heard that it generally takes 30 days for an action to become a habit, but this guy really sheds new light on this theory. First of all, if we focus on one goal at a time (rather than a long bulleted list), we are better able to live in the moment. To give our attention fully to the task at hand.
And secondly, we are not setting ourselves up for failure. By selecting a new habit to add or subtract from our lives each month, we are not trying to predict our entire year. Instead, we are assessing our current needs and desires and addressing them, fully. While writing our New Year’s resolutions on December 31st, we may not know that our focus next July should be to change jobs or to spend more time with a child. So let’s not try to carve out our lists in stone. Rather, let’s allow them to be dictated by the pulse of our daily needs.
What does this mean?  This means NO MORE LONG LISTS OF RESOLUTIONS. You will only have ONE. To tackle one new challenge every month this year. Whether it is to drink more water, eat less sugar, learn a new sport, or adopt a pug … DOG … PUG!

READY TO ROCK THE NEW YEAR WITH ME? Let’s do this together. I’ll be sharing my 30-day challenges every month on my blog, and I’d love to hear yours! I’ll also be posting some inspiration to help keep you focused. The first day of every month… right here… it’s a date.  So cheers, mes amis. Here’s to a rockin’ 2018 – a year of self-discovery and living in the moment!
