how to sew a drop-cloth pillow

#dropclothpillow

The title of this post is boring, but I assure you – just add a bold mandala stencil and you’ve got one sweet, boho pillow that is anything but boring! I used two mandala stencils from Stencil Revolution to create designs on simple canvas drop-cloth remnants – and voila! Decorative throw pillows that definitely add a punch to any room. You can find detailed instructions on how to paint with stencils at my post mandala stenciled pillowsAs for the sewing, I’ve got you covered. Here is an easy tutorial for whipping up a throw pillow from a drop-cloth remnant.

step 1 – prepare the fabric

Before stenciling or embellishing the pillow front, you first need to cut a piece of canvas drop-cloth approximately  24″ x 40″. Next, toss it in the washer with detergent and a cup of white vinegar to soften the stiff cloth. Then iron out the wrinkles while still slightly damp.

step 2 – stencil or embellish

This is the fun part, but you don’t have to stick with stenciling.  You can embroider or paint your design free-hand. Let dry completely before continuing.

step 3 – cutting

Once your design is dry, cut the pillow front 19″ x 19″, keeping the design neatly centered.

Next, cut two pieces to form the pillow back. Cut piece A 19″ x 12″ as shown below, with the hemmed edge of the drop-cloth along one long side.

Cut a second piece (piece B) in a similar fashion, measuring 19″ x 10″. Once again, keep the hemmed edge of the drop-cloth along one long side.

Next, place piece A onto the pillow front, as shown below, with right sides together.

Now place piece B onto the pillow front, as shown below, with right sides together. Neatly pin in place, then stitch a small seam around all four sides.

To soften the peaks of harsh corners, stitch diagonally across each of the four corners. Then trim. Finally, trim all the seams.

Turn the pillow cover inside out and stuff with an 18″ square pillow insert. The back will close nicely over the insert.

Guess what? You’re finished. It’s as easy as that! Now sit back and enjoy your new festive pillow!
