the lost art of county fairs

large macrame wall hanging - myfrenchtwist.com

It’s Friday, and that means another craft project and tutorial on My French Twist. But today, you’ll have to forgive me. I’ve been busy working on a large macrame wall hanging for the County Fair. (Yes, I did patronize the local event, along with hoards of little ladies carrying in their freshly baked pies. And no, I do not wear pants with elastic waistbands or tease my hair.) Okay, now that we’re clear on that, let me share with you my entry…

Be warned, the photo is awful, but until I can properly photograph it on a dark background, this will have to do.

It measures approximately 4 feet wide and over 5 feet tall. For the pole, my friends at the local hardware store suggested a broomstick, and for the wall hanging I used plain old rope (lots of it). I’ll give full details in a future post. But for now, here’s the deal…

  • Broomstick … $3
  • 960 feet of rope … $200
  • The look on the faces of the pie-toting, afghan-making ladies when I brought this in … priceless   (PLEASE NOTE: I have nothing against baking pies – although I prefer eating them – and I plan to learn to crochet one day myself. Lately, though, I’ve just been a little tied up…)

  1. Hello Wendy! Thank you so much for featuring my macrame curtain on your blog post! At my shop you can also find the same cotton cord I use on my projects!

    Best wishes,
    Aggela

  2. These are truly work of art in small packages. Oh what I would give to be able to do that.

  3. That is absolutely gorgeous! I just love it and am looking forward to the tutorial!

  4. Congrats on your Best in Class award! County fairs are unfortunately disappearing due to lack of interest. My own county hasn’t held one since I was a kid. I would love to enter my own works and see what everyone else in the community is making.
