april creative challenge reveals - my frencht twist

We recently had our second craft club meeting, and it couldn’t have been more fun! The challenge was to either make a modern version of the fifties day dress or embellish a store bought bag. We ended up with two adorable dresses and three rockin’ bags.

Robin made a classic shirtdress and hemmed it shorter to be worn tunic-style (above). She also transformed a simple plastic tote from Joann Fabrics into a sweet satchel. She embellished the bag with sturdy ribbon, reworked the existing handles into an embellishment, added new handles made from webbing, and included a velcro closure.

Carolyn transformed a simple canvas bag into a raffia fringed beach tote. Using ribbon, fringe, fabric glue, and Dritz Fray Check, she spent less than $8 on the entire project!

I’ve already shared my two projects in previous posts, but here they are again.

Meeting with my artsy friends always spurs great conversation and reminiscences of when we first learned to sew. One of our members recalled how she asked her mother to buy her two potholders for a sewing project when she was a teenager. The project? A groovy halter top she spied in her Sixteen magazine (it was the seventies, okay?) What did her mother bring her? Not ordinary quilted potholders, but ones with magnets inside! Umm, she may stick to the frig when she wears it? I never grow tired of hearing that story, so today, once we all unveiled our projects, this gal unveiled something else… a halter top made the right way! And we have proof.

Next came craft time – little Anthro-hack tea towels! You can learn more about them here. They add a funky homespun touch to the kitchen, and they are perfect for hostess gifts or basket liners.
