retrofitted granny gowns - my french twist

My love affair with sewing began when I was very young, and because my coming of age was set in the era of bell bottom pants and maxi dresses, I will always harbor an affinity for these vintage styles. Needless to say, I’m ecstatic that all things seventies is currently emerging on the runways in Paris. And my absolute all-time favorite? Granny gowns.

When it comes to granny gowns, less is not more. MORE is more. And more is better. Combining 4 or 5 of my favorite prints and wearing them all at one time…I think I’ve died and gone to Heaven. In fact, I still have a report I made in elementary school entitled “Textiles.” Between the construction paper covers, there are pages filled with tiny snips of fabric – wool, silk, rayon, cotton, taffeta, linen…  And the prints – houndstooth, madras plaid, tiny calico flowers – made all the textures come to life.

The problem is that anything looks sweet on an innocent 8 year old. Not so much on middle-aged women. So my quest is find a way to infuse my grown-up wardrobe with bit of Mod Squad flavor. And I think I’ve found it. I adore this maxi dress from Urban Outfitter’s bohemian Ecote collection. What an awesome piece to add to my Fall wardrobe with some funky little suede boots.
