scandi christmas tablescape with ikea to the rescue

sca;di christmas tablescape

Our next task in this Handmade Christmas Challenge is to plan a wonderful and welcoming tablescape for the Christmas meal. And participating in another fun tablescape bloghop organized by Chloe with Celebrate and Decorate is just what I needed to get my creative juices flowing.

A light and airy table setting with a Scandinavian flavor is just what I needed for my Christmas meal, especially after my Thanksgiving feast for vegans, vegetarians, carnivores, paleotarians, pescatarians and fruitarians. (Okay, exaggerating a tad, but you can read the backstory for yourself.) Now back to my yuletide table.

I envisioned a black and white color scheme with some modern Danish touches, but I wasn’t sure where to start. Take at peek at my inspiration board.

Then I found myself in Ikea on an unrelated errand and remembered (as I do each time I find myself browsing their aisles) why I love that store so much. And sure enough, Ikea came to the rescue for my Christmas tablescape challenge.

First I spotted this Sommar tablecloth with a simple black & white design. (And for under $25 folks!)

With this tablecloth as my starting point, the rest was easy.

The building blocks of my tablescape: Snobbig placemat, $3.99; Strala paper tree, $14.99; Strala paper star, $7.99; paper napkins (set of 50), $1.99.

But the magic really begins when the lights are dimmed…

Of course, I did add a few items from my cupboards… some woodsy garland from Michael’s that I also used for my Christmas wreath, adorned with a string of silver lights…

a few miniature bottlebrush trees atop my crystal candlesticks…

and I brought out a handful of tiny wooden ornaments bought in Europe…

So there you have it. With a little help from Ikea, I assembled my interpretation of a fresh, Scandi inspired Christmas tablescape.  I love this simple black & white color scheme. I also love the geometric accents with the tablecloth design and the hanging star and lighted paper trees. But what I love most are the bright pops of orange and pink.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering about my menu (if you read about my Thanksgiving challenge of cooking for so many blended palates!)… I’m keeping the Christmas fare simple. I assigned the two man children and the two girlfriends each a dish to bring. It can be animal-friendly raw veggies, carnivorous kabobs from a recent hunting safari, or a fast food Happy Meal. Don’t care. I’ll be sipping a glass of Malbec and enjoying my beautiful tablescape while they serve the food.

  1. Wendy, I love Ikea and I can see how you were able to finish off your table with their help! I really love your paper trees, especially when lit at night and your festive napkins. It was great being in this hop with you and meeting new friends! Merry Christmas!

  2. Thank you for being part of the Christmas Tablescape blog hop! My favorite element was the garland on the table. That really created a great look and festive holiday feel!

    1. Thank you Chloe and thanks for including me in this wonderful blog Hop! I really enjoy being a part of it.

  3. This is such a unique theme and I love the pops of color and the mini bottle brush trees. It was fun blog hopping with you again.

  4. Wendy, I love your modern take on your Christmas Tablescape! The tablecloth is a great foundation and the pink and orange pops of color are fabulous! I am crazy for the bottlebrush trees! There is no IKEA within 100 miles of me, probably saves me a lot of money! Wishing you a peaceful and joyfulChristmas!

  5. Wendy, I’m impressed how beautifully the orange and bright pink work for Christmas. The tablecloth is super cute and the pattern in black and white is a great backdrop for the sweet little figures.

  6. Such a different take on Christmas! I love Ikea, they just put one in a little closer to me this spring. I like the bright pops of color with the black and white. Merry Christmas!

  7. So fresh and modern! Our closest Ikea is an hour away so I don’t get in very often. I adore the bottlebrush trees in the candlesticks. Merry Christmas!

  8. Your table is pretty and so creative. Have a Merry Christmas!

  9. Your holiday table is beautiful. I love the pink and orange on the black and white. And…I can’t ever resist a bottle brush tree. My favorite. So fun blog hopping with you!

  10. How fun to see your Scandi-Christmas table with its neutral tones and pops of colour! Love the orange and pink against that beautiful tablecloth. Great find! The white plates and gray placemats ground the scene and look so inviting – would love to pull up a chair! I love Ikea but the closest one is about 5 hours away so it is rare that we get to one. So glad to hear that you are going to take the more simple route for this holiday and not have to come up with recipes for all your family member’s different tastes, allergies and philosophies! Enjoyed my stop here on the Blog Hop!

  11. Very fabulous Wendy! I am swooning over the ombre pink bottle brush trees, I am crazy over those! Such a modern vibe for the holidays, it’s fantastic fun!

  12. Lovely Wendy and my Ikea(s) are each about 150 miles away but that doesn’t stop me from going. I love your pops of color. The orange and pink are great….as are the pink bottle brush trees atop crystal candle sticks. Genius. All in all your Scandi Christmas Tablescape is a winner! It is always fun blog hopping with you. Merry Christmas!

  13. I always enjoy seeing non-traditional designs for Christmas too. It is like a breath of fresh air. I love the traditional, but I find it always fun to see how the challenge of using other colors and designs can be incorporated into a Christmas tablesetting. I love your pop of bright and festive colors in your prink and orange napkins. It immediately puts me in a party mood. It contrasts nicely with the black and white tablecloth and grey placements. The hanging star as part of your centerpiece captures my attention. Could be an all winter tablescape. Nicely done. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  14. Wendy, this is unique, warm and inviting! We do not have an Ikea anywhere nearby (big mistake on their part!), but I love the clean lines of these accessories you chose to use, and the pops of color. I may have to borrow the idea of the bottle brush trees on candlesticks – love that, and my DR table is still feeling a little naked after all the time I spent decorating in the sunroom. Your idea of Christmas fare is perfect. Enjoy!
