NFL wreath - my french twist

I don’t usually buy into overdone trends. You know, the Kate Gosselin hairstyle donned by moms in mini-vans everywhere, Dooney & Bourke purses strolling the aisles of Walmart… you get the idea. I’ve even retired my Longchamp bag now that it’s no longer an enviable French find. But deco mesh wreaths? That’s a different story. Those burlap & mesh wreaths are plastered all over Pinterest & seem to be popping up everywhere. Nonetheless, I’m kinda digging them.

I love football, and I love Fall. So it made sense to come up with a fun door decoration to usher in the pigskin season. After all, I’m a Bengals season ticket holder and live within walking distance from their stadium. After researching tons of wreath designs, I decided the ever popular mesh deco one lends itself best to a rockin’ NFL wreath. And my main requirement? It can’t be cheesy. But how to make a football decoration elegant?

With one trip to Hobby Lobby, I bought my supplies: a wire wreath form, one roll of burlap mesh ribbon, one roll of burlap chevron ribbon, and pipe-cleaners.

Next, I created more poufs with the chevron ribbon (about one pouf per section) and secured them with pipe-cleaners. I basically used the chevron ribbon as a filler, tying them to the wreath wherever I saw gaps.

Once finished with the rolls of wide ribbon, I flipped the wreath over face down. I then cut pieces of extra ribbon 10″ to 14″ (I used a very narrow black & white ribbon as well as a 1 1/4″ burlap & white stripe ribbon) and tied them randomly to the back of the wreath. The more you add, the fussier the wreath will be. When finished, I turned the wreath over and pulled the random ribbons toward the front and “fluffed” all the poufs and ribbons. The cool thing about this wreath style is that you are free to use whatever size and color ribbons you desire. Make it your own.

I didn’t want a bright orange and black wreath that screamed BENGAL TIGER (at least, not until we make it to a Super Bowl), so I chose subtle colors and earthy textures as my base. However, I do need to top it off with a bit of Bengals orange, so I found a funky little tin letter B that I thought would do the trick. With a bit of paint, a floral stem, and some raffia ribbon… I have a classy, demure NFL wreath.
