Go big or go home, right? Well, maybe that mantra shouldn’t be applied to everything, but when it comes to repurposing dusty, old thrift store finds, it’s the perfect slogan. If you’re going to breathe new life into an outdated, discarded object, make it memorable. Go big. Especially with this macrame lawn chair.

When my friend Carolyn brought me a discarded, vintage folding lawn chair, I saw its potential immediately. I’d like to attribute this to my boundless imagination, but it’s more likely because Pinterest displays about 700 pictures of macramé lawn chairs on my feed daily. Here are some of my favorites.

I love this idea, and I’ve been wanting to try it! Take an old chair frame and restring it with new colorful macramé cord. Just how hard can it be…

More difficult than I thought.

Despite the many photographs of macrame chairs floating around on social media, I was surprised to discover that good tutorials for them were few. After sorting through a handful of them and a lot of trial and error, I finally conquered the instructions and ended up with a sweet and sassy summer chair. Oh, and I went big. Hot pink and orange.

and ended up with this!

This was my first attempt at restringing a macrame lawn chair, but now that I’ve conquered the crochet chain stitch, I’m hooked!

For this project, you’ll need the following supplies:

  • lawn chair (if you are unable to find a vintage one, chair frames can be bought here)
  • 200 yards of nylon macrame cord (100 yards of each color; I like this brand)
  • 2 crochet hooks, size Q (can be purchased here)
  • matches
  • scissors

Next step:  Here’s the sticky part. I searched the internet high & low for a good tutorial, but I still ended up having to invest a lot of trial & error into the process. The tutorial I found most helpful was this one. However, bookmark this post, because within the next 2 weeks (I promise) I’ll be publishing my own tutorial (with video instructions, too) that will be SUPER EASY to follow! And here is my complete tutorial!

Yep, you could say I published this post of this sweet & sassy chair just to whet your appetite. Now follow My French Twist so you’ll know the minute my tutorial comes out, gather your supplies, and get ready to go big.

  1. Did the tutorial for the Macrame chair ever get posted? This popped up in my email and then to my shock it says nothing found..

  2. Without hanging this chair, we can sit in the garden. It has so many health benefits too. The key benefit is, it gives relaxation after coming from a hectic working day.

  3. Help, I need some cord for couple of chairs that I’m doing. I need green and heavy enough for these chairs. If you could tell me where to get it, I would really appreciate it, thank you.

  4. I can’t wait. I always have trouble trying to macrame projects that require you to wrap the ends around..well, anything lol. For some reason I just have trouble finishing the projects. I can’t wait to see how you did it.

  5. This looks amazing, pink and orange is a favourite colour combo of mine. I’ll wait for your tutorial I think rather than rushing to view these others. I trust you to show me all you’ve learnt! Now to check the garage for old chairs….

  6. I simply love your color choices for the chair and the style of macrame design that you chose! Gorgeous. Can’t wait for the tutorial. I have been dying to make something macrame for awhile now and I have a shorter directors chair that is missing its fabric seat and back. A project like this would be perfect for it.

    1. Actually Crystal, this chair is sturdier now than before! Paracord is extremely Sturdy. This chair will hold just about anyone!!
