sewing masks – flowers for everyone

I’m making flowers for everyone. Well, actually I’m making masks, but I’m using up fabric remnants from my sewing stash, and that means girly, colorful, playful prints. Like I said – flowers for everyone. Even for my conservative corporate husband.

If we need to wear medical masks during this unexpected pandemic, who says they have to look somber and institutional? Why not pretty? In fact, I think these floral masks just might add a touch of happy to an otherwise scary situation.

supplies needed:

  • one piece of cotton fabric – 9″ x 14″
  • two pieces of thin elastic – 6 1/2″ in length
  • two pieces double fold bias tape – 6″ in length

step 1 – sewing the mask

Cut a piece of fabric 9″ x 14″.  With right sides together, fold in half and stitch together as shown below.

Trim seam; turn right side out and press.

Fold pleats as shown below and pin. Baste the ends to keep the pleats in place.

step 2 – adding elastic

Cut two pieces of elastic, each measuring 6 1/5″ in length. Pin in place, as shown below, and stitch.

step 3 – adding bias tape

Cut two pieces of bias tape approximately 6″ long. Pin one to each end of the mask and stitch, as shown in the photos below.

step 4 – finishing touches

Finally, fold the elastic towards the outside and make another stitch down the edge to keep it in place.
