In week 7, I built color palettes that reflect my personal taste. Now it is time to narrow those colors down to a core palette for my spring wardrobe. The neutrals I decided on were black, gray and white. And I added a taupe-y brown.
I also determined last week that I have a fetish for blues and blue-greens. I’ve narrowed down this category to just a few shades that I simply adore. I’m referring to this group as my near-neutrals, as these will comprise many of the garments I’ll use as core building-block pieces.
Likewise, I narrowed down my accent colors from last week to one favorite, a saffron mustard-y yellow.
So my final color palette looks like this.
If you recall from week 7, I’ve decided on 20 pieces of clothing for my capsule wardrobe: 7 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 dresses, 2 skirts and 4 extras. Now I need to designate which pieces will fall into each shade category. Although I haven’t yet selected fabrics, I do know the likely color for certain garments.
For example, the following pieces will definitely fall into my neutrals palette: tee shirt, sleeveless blouse, tunic, cropped leggings, culottes, and shorts.
The garments that will more than likely fall into my near neutrals (solids) palette are the following: chambray blouse, jean jacket, boyfriend jeans, and lightweight cardigan.
That leaves quite a few remaining pieces with which I can play around. These I can make from funky florals, bold geometrics, and “pop” colors that will bring my capsule wardrobe to life. I’ll probably hunt down some modern vintage prints for these – a shift, long-sleeved blouse, short-sleeved top, pencil skirt, and maxi dress. I’m thinking of a sweet Nani Iro double gauze for the scarf.
If you’re keeping track, that just leaves the following:
- a baseball tee (one with a pop icon graphic maybe?)
- chiffon full skirt (a muted solid)
- a dressy dress (ideas anyone?)
- summer shawl (thinking mustard yellow)
Whew! This week’s task seems simple, but it takes some time and thought! At least now I have a game plan when I hit the fabric shops and department stores. (Helpful hint: print out your color palette and keep it in your purse!) I hereby declare my color palette officially narrowed. Your turn…
