sewing my capsule wardrobe for spring

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to return to one of my favorite passions – sewing my own clothes. But designing and making my own capsule wardrobe somehow fell by the wayside as I grew older and my days became filled with work, home, and kids.

This year I’m changing that. I came across Sew Your Capsule by SewUprising that offered just the inspiration I needed. I’ve seen other formulas for curating a capsule wardrobe, but for some reason the instructions in this short e-book just clicked with me. You can read it in less than an hour, and it helps you gather inspiration, define your own style, and make a simple plan incorporating all your favorite colors and detailing.

If you want to join me in this challenge, great! If you’d rather just follow along and see what I come up with, that’s fine too. Hopefully, you’ll gather some ideas and a bit of inspiration.

gathering inspiration

After reading through this book, I began collecting outfits and garments I love on Pinterest. Studying these photos helped me determine the colors, lines (straight, full, baggy, etc.), and details to which I gravitate. It’s easy to see that I like natural fibers such as linen, the color blue, and a casual bohemian flavor.

making a plan

I’ve decided on making 9 pieces, which Sew Your Capsule refers to as the Sudoku template. Below: 1- linen top, probably white, 2- cropped linen top, 3- tunic, 4- long skirt, patchwork, 5- skinny linen pants, 6- wide cropped linen pants, 7- cotton print pencil skirt, 8- summer shawl, 9- short cotton chambray dress.

This is my tentative plan; follow along & see the results! Or better yet, join me and share the outfits you make!

The biggest compliment is a little share – pin the photo below!

  1. I love this idea. When I moved to France, I had to bring my mother-in-law’s sewing machine she gifted me. I finally got a replacement plug for it, and I’ve been looking for ways to upcycle some of my favorite pieces I can not get from the States anymore. As soon as I have a plan in play I’m going to copy this!

    1. Good for you! I feel your pain, as I’ve had trouble replacing parts for French lamps here in the US. Good luck!
