adding pom poms to a blanket

Ready for a super simple DIY project? Have 20 minutes to spare? Because that’s all you will need to make some adorable yarn pom poms and use them to embellish a blanket or throw.

supplies needed:

• 1 skein yarn
• scissors
• large serving fork
• embroidery thread and needle
• small blanket or throw

step 1 – prepare the yarn

I promised you fast and easy, so brace yourself for probably the least scientific craft tutorial you’ve ever read. First, cut the yard bundle into lengths approximately 18 inches. I know any follow-the-rules crafters out there are probably gasping right now because I’m not unraveling the yarn properly. But who’s got time for that?!

step 2 – make the pom poms

Now grab a small bundle of yarn strips (see the photo below) and wrap them around a large serving fork.

Next, run a piece of small twine or cording around the center of the bundle and secure with a tight knot. 

Gently slide the pom pom off the fork. Going around the outside egdes in a circular fashion, cut the yarn loops in half.  

Don’t worry if the pom pom looks a bit disheveled. Its shape can easily be restored with a quick trim of all the long pieces. You’re basically giving it a haircut! 

step 3 – attach pom poms to blanket

Attaching the pom poms to a blanket is easy. For this project, I used a beautiful knit throw I found for a great price. First trim the ends of the twine or cording. Then space the pom poms out evenly along one long edge of the blanket. Attach them with an embroidery needle and thread.
