Whether you’re planning a romantic dinner for two or hosting a cocktail party for your Galentines, these macramé heart coasters will definitely gather lots of compliments. If you’ve been wanting to learn macramé, this small project is great for beginners.

supplies needed:

step 1 – lark’s head knots

Cut 17 pieces of cord, each measuring 50 inches. Be sure to tape both ends of each piece to prevent fraying while working. Tie 16 pieces onto a rod or pole using a Lark’s Head Knot. (Save the remaining piece for later.)

step 2 – square knots

With the 4 center individual cords, tie a Square Knot, as shown photo A below. Beneath that knot, tie 2 Alternating Square Knots (see photo B below.)

Continue in this fashion until you have completed 8 horizontal rows of Square Knots, as shown below.

For row 9, begin with the third individual cord from the left & make a row of 7 Square Knots.

Row 10: Beginning with the 5th cord from the left, make a row of 6 Square Knots.

Row 11: Beginning with the 7th cord from the left, make 2 Square Knots, then skip 4 cords, make 2 more Square Knots.

Row 12: Beginning with the 9th cord from the left, make 1 Square Knot, skip 8 cords, make 1 more Square Knot.

Now slide the Lark’s Head Knots off the pole and lay the design on a flat surface. Cut the looped ends (from the Lark’s Head Knots) open.

step 3 – half hitch knots

The Half Hitch Knot can be a bit tricky, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be fine. (Here’s a video you may find helpful.) Once you’ve familiarized yourself with this technique, it’s time to trim the outline of the heart by using a lead rope & making Half Hitch Knots. Use the piece of cording you put aside in the beginning of step 1 for the lead rope.

The following video shows this process.

To finish the macramé heart coasters, trim the tassels around the circumference. Next, unravel them. (Use a comb or a toothpick.) Once frayed, trim the tassels a final time.

I decided to throw in some orange coasters with the traditional Valentine’s pink for a bolder statement. But whatever colors you use, these macramé heart coasters are sweet!

The biggest compliment is a little share – pin the photo below!

  1. Hi Wendy!
Is it possible to use natural cotton cording and then dye them pink or red? Since it’s cotton do you think they will shrink? Any other drawbacks? Thank you!!

  2. These are lovely Wendy, I love how clear your instructions are too. They will be featured at this week’s Handmade Monday 🙂

  3. I think these are super cute!
I may have tried macrame when I was a teen. But it’s been a long time!

I appreciate your tutorial. I think even my teens might enjoy making these.

    Blessings!
