measuring tape earrings

Yes, you read that correctly. Measuring tape earrings. And although I don’t usually fall for gimmicky items, I think these are sweet. They also make a perfect gift for that crafty friend.

supplies needed:

step 1 – prepare measuring tape

You can find measuring tapes in both cloth and vinyl, but I prefer the vinyl ones. They don’t fray and they hold their shape well. Cut a 3″ piece from the tape.

Fold in half, then make a small hole through the top using a leather hole punch.

step 2 – make the earring dangle

Before making the entire earring, first build the dangle part. String the beads of your choice onto a flat head pin. Then trim the wire and form into a small loop, as shown in the photos below. Refer to my tutorial on earring making for more detailed instructions on how to do this.

step 3 – assemble the earring

To assemble the earring, you need to know how to open and close a jump ring correctly. Here is a great video tutorial on how to do this. (1) Connect the earring dangle to a small jump ring, then thread the jump ring into the bottom hole of a button. (2) Next, open a larger jump ring and place the following items onto it in the order listed: tape measure loop, top hole of the button, and the earring hook. Make sure the jump rings are closed tightly.

These measuring tape earrings are really that simple! Once you feel comfortable with the technique, you can embellish measuring tapes in a variety of ways.

The biggest compliment is a little share – please pin the photo below!

  1. Brilliant, not to mention how many pairs you can make from one measuring tape. These are perfect for creatives. Featuring when my link party opens.

  2. I’ve never seen this idea before, but you executed it so well!
I feel like all the gift ideas I see online for “that crafty person in your life” are always either the basic, stereotypical products (mugs, t-shirts, tote bags) that only use basic sewing imagery (yarn, needles, scissors, or thread) or just a new crafting tool/set for them to use. This definitely opens doors!
The only thing I’d do differently (just personal preference) is cut the measuring tape from the very end instead of the beginning. Then I can still use the tape to measure without subtracting for the first few inches. (I just hate subtraction, it’s the worst of the four operations.)

These also remind me of some earrings my sister made recently for a James Bond theme party that had little lock-picking tools dangling down — just adding that in for inspiration if anyone has a similar party soon!
